As Texas softball swept through Kansas this weekend the Longhorns are looking like true contenders heading into the Big 12 Championship tournament on the horizon starting May 10.
Texas won all three games against the Jayhawks this weekend with a 4-2 win Sunday to clinch things.

The No. 11 Longhorns are up to 39-12 on the season and 10-6 in the Big 12 Conference — good for third place currently — after the dominant weekend. Oklahoma still has the conference lead with a perfect 15-0 mark in the Big 12, with Oklahoma State in second at 13-2.
Kaitlyn Washington kept cranking out the hits with a 2-for-3 showing Sunday including two RBIs, while Lauren Burke was also 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI as both players went 5-for-8 each over the three-game set.
Miranda Elish went the distance on the mound for Texas allowing just the two earned runs while scattering nine hits. Elish had control and command through nine innings, issuing zero walks while striking out eight and getting some great play from the defense behind her as well.

What a nifty, backhanded flip at second for the force by our All-American @JanaeJefferson4! pic.twitter.com/YR5e7KRkwz

All four runs came across in the top of the third inning for the Longhorns. Senior Ki’Audra Hayter came across with the first run after singling and taking second on an error, crossing home plate on a Janae Jefferson bloop double. Burke hit a clutch two-out single to score Jefferson for the second run and Washington followed Mary Iakopo’s single with a two-run single of her own to put Texas ahead 4-0 and on its way to the sweep.

Elish got into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the seventh inning as Kansas pushed across two runs and had baserunners on first and third with two outs as the Jayhawks threatened the lead. The Texas hurler was able to escape any further trouble by inducing a grounder to the mound to end the inning.
Now the Longhorns will host Incarnate Word for one game on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Red & Charline McCombs Field before Baylor comes to town for a two-game set to close out the regular season. Texas hosts Baylor May 4-5, with Saturday’s start time set for 6 p.m. and the regular-season finale Sunday at 1 p.m. The Big 12 Championship will take place in Oklahoma City May 10-11.
