WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 3
SERIES RECORD: Texas 9, Iowa State 1
LAST: #19 Texas 33, Iowa State 7 (2012)
THE CYCLONES have a habit of knocking off teams with superior talent, a testament to head coach Paul Rhoads’ ability to get his players to outperform the opponent. Iowa State looks to add a set of horns to the wall when Texas, fresh off its first bye week, heads to Ames. [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] However, logic dictates that Texas will likely repeat its last trip to Iowa, where the Longhorns sprinted out to a 34-0 lead by the end of the first half on the way to a 37-14 win.
The Cyclones haven’t had a strong offense since Seneca Wallace left after the 2002 season, creating a daunting challenge for the defense to rein in the Big 12 up tempo offenses. The road into 2013 only gets tougher for Iowa State when you factor in the loss of 2011 Co-Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year A.J. Klein and Jake Knott at the linebacker position. The Cyclones also need to fill a hole at quarterback after Steele Jantz graduated and Jared Barnett bolted to Illinois State. Sophomore Sam B. Richardson will need to come into his own under center.
None of these changes should inspire confidence in the Cyclones.
Texas and Iowa State are heading in opposite directions. The Longhorns appear primed to make a run at the Big 12 title and the Cyclones are running out of wind on their way back to the conference cellar.
Texas should win handily. The only chance of a slip-up would come if the Longhorns look past the Cyclones in anticipation of the Red River Rivalry. Even then, this game looks like a win for the burnt orange.
