AUSTIN, Texas — Here are some quotes from Texas coach Tom Herman’s press conference Monday and some notes for the upcoming game against Iowa State:
• Herman on the[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] Texas defense versus Kansas State: “It’s not like when things are going poorly you’re going to start drawing stuff in the dirt and calling things you haven’t practiced. So the calls were all the same. Our guys settled down, and I think Malcolm Roach and Brandon Jones and Joseph Ossai, those three guys, their leadership was invaluable in that situation.
“When things weren’t looking really good, to have those guys be as confident to their teammates as they were was a big part of that. At the end of the day, we stopped the run. We kept them in second-and-long, third-and-long, and we executed.”
• Texas is 14-2 all-time against the Cyclones, including 2-0 under Herman. The Longhorns hold a 6-1 record when competing in Ames, including a 17-7 win in 2017, Herman’s first year at Texas.
• More from Herman on his defense and its upward trend: “You’re not going to change anything in the middle of a season from a schematic standpoint, from a philosophical standpoint. This is what we are, this is what we believe in, and we’re going to try our best within the framework of the system to put you into situations to be successful and, you know, we’ve got to coach you better and you guys (have) got to buy in and trust it.”
• Herman has been on both sides of the Texas-Iowa State series. He was the Cyclones’ offensive coordinator from 2009-11. Herman helped Iowa State earn its first victory over the Longhorns in 2010. That game still stands as Iowa State’s lone victory in Austin.
• Herman on his comment after the game Saturday about the “misinformation” in the media surrounding the team’s play: “I was just trying to educate our fans, really, as to what to believe and what not to believe. I pay no mind to it — I really don’t. Again, if you want proof of how this team is doing, watch the game. You saw a team Saturday afternoon that was completely united, loved each other, played really, really hard for each other. So that was it, just hopefully our fans can be cautious with what they choose to believe.”
• Herman on the likelihood of cold weather Saturday in Ames: “Thankfully it’s going to be pretty chilly tomorrow (in Austin) for practice, so our guys will practice outside. But, again, temperature is way down the list in terms of things that … weather phenomenon that you gotta deal with when it comes to football. We’ve got sweats and tights and gloves. They will be fine. They will be running around, (and) I’m sure we will have heaters on the sidelines.
“You don’t ever alter your game plan or think of the impact of temperature. Twenty-mile-an-hour wind — that will affect some of what you do. Sideways rain — that will affect what you do, but cold is … it doesn’t really affect your game plan whatsoever.”
