A Busy Weekend For Longhorn Sports

Longhorn athletics has a busy weekend ahead. Volleyball begins NCAA tournament action on Thursday and Friday night, the men’s and women’s basketball teams compete on the road and the Football team will face Baylor for a share of the -- and possibly the outright-- Big 12 Title against. Here’s a closer look of the Longhorns exciting weekend schedule.
The No. 1 ranked Texas volleyball starts the NCAA tournament on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Texas State. The Longhorns enter the game hot on a 19 game win streek and having recently claimed the Big 12 title by going undefeated in conference play for the first time in program season. The NCAA named the Longhorns as the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament which theoretically gives them a clear run to the final four. But as coach Jerritt Elliott has said, nothing is guaranteed and the team will face plenty of challenges on their attempt to repeat as national champions, including playing in Lincoln Nebraska for the regional round. Texas State enters the tournament with a 24-12 overall record and a 11-8 Sun Belt conference records. Assuming Texas beats Texas State--the Longhorns are 26-0 in first round matches-- the Longhorns will face the winner of UTSA vs. Texas A&M on Friday. A match versus A&M would be a re-match of the Longhorns second round match with A&M last year, which the Longhorns won 3-1 on their way to the 2012 National Title. Both the first and second round matches will air on the Longhorn Network.
Texas Men’s basketball team (7-1) heads on the road for their first true road test of the season at Temple in Philadelphia on Saturday at 11 a.m. morning. The Longhorns expect to come head-to-head with a hostile environment and a physically tough team when they face the Owls (3-3). The game will air on ESPNU.
The Women’s basketball team also heads on the road, as it faces No. 3 Tennessee in Knoxville. The Longhorns lost to the Volunteers 95-74 when the two met last year in Austin. This year the women’s basketball team has started off with 6-2 and recently upset No. 11 Texas A&M at the Paradise Jam tournament. The Volunteers come into the game undefeated (7-0) with their biggest winning coming over No. 12 UNC. The game starts at 12 p.m. on Sunday Dec. 8, and will air on Fox Sports South.
The Longhorn Football team heads up the road to Waco for what has stacked up as it’s biggest game of the season against the No. 9 Baylor Bears on Saturday afternoon. More information on that game here. The game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. and will air on FOX and the Longhorn Radio Network.
