The US Team has now won the tournament three times, defeating Canada to earn the 2002 crown when it was a U-19 event, and most recently downing Korea DPR 2-1 in the 2008 U-20 Women’s World Cup. Smith didn’t enter into a contest as the U.S. goalkeeper as Bryane Heaberlin played her sixth-straight complete match in the game against Germany.
Smith is one of three goalkeepers named to the squad, and the only one who hasn’t started her collegiate career. Smith becomes the third member of the Longhorns’ program to play for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, joining Kelly Wilson (2002) and Stephanie Logterman (2004, 2006).
