The Texas Longhorns medical staff has determined that David Ash must be free of concussion-like symptoms for one week before being able to return. With Ash still experiencing symptoms related to his concussion, Mack Brown announced on Saturday [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] that David Ash would miss the Oklahoma game.
Case McCoy was named the starter with either freshman Tyrone Swoopes or redshirt freshman Jalen Overstreet as the backup against Oklahoma. Swoopes has yet to take a snap, and the AT&T Red River Rivalry presents a difficult atmosphere for veteran quarterbacks.
“We’re pleased with him,” Brown said. “He’s making progress. … It’s not the friendly confines of home in Dallas on Saturday morning, but if we feel the need to put him in, we will do that.”
Texas will have two weeks after Oklahoma until facing TCU.
Ash would have to be ruled out for the remainder of the season to be able to seek a medical redshirt under NCAA rules.
One Last Thing: Offensive tackle Josh Cochran (shoulder) will return to practice, Brown said. … In an effort to solidify the linebacker situation, defensive coordinator Greg Robinson plans to use Dalton Santos at middle linebacker with Steve Edmond sliding over to the weak side.
