Eckerman earns second-straight AVCA All-America First Team honors

Six Longhorns earn AVCA All-America honors on the eve of the NCAA national semifinal.

The top-ranked Texas Volleyball team placed six players on the 2013 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Teams, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon. Junior outside hitter Haley Eckerman earned first team honors for the second-consecutive season, while senior outside hitter Bailey Webster and freshman middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu were second team selections.

This marks the eighth-straight season that UT has landed at least two players on All-America teams.

Additionally, senior setter Hannah Allison, junior middle blocker Khat Bell and sophomore middle blocker Molly McCage were each named AVCA Division I Honorable Mention All-America.

To date, Texas has had 35 players named All-American, earning a total of 98 All-America honors.

The 2013 Big 12 Conference Player of the Year, Eckerman leads the Longhorns with 430 kills this season (4.13 kps) while hitting .280 with 38 aces (0.37 aps), 260 digs (2.50 dps), 44 blocks (0.42 bps) and 494.0 points. As a freshman in 2011, Eckerman was named to the AVCA Second Team en route to earning National Freshman of the Year honors.

A two-time AVCA First Team honoree (2011-12), Webster currently has 369 kills (3.51 kps) while hitting .295 with 70 digs (0.67 dps), 65 blocks (0.62 bps) and 405.0 points.

Ogbogu, the 2013 Big 12 Freshman of the Year and first Texas freshman to earn AVCA All-America team status since Eckerman in 2011, leads the Longhorns with a hitting percentage of .401 on 141 kills (1.76 kps).

Each of the three AVCA All-America Teams is comprised of 14 athletes. The Division I AVCA National Player of the Year will be announced on Dec. 20 at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet presented by Northwestern Mutual.

Texas plays Wisconsin tomorrow in the NCAA national semifinal at 6:30 p.m. Central on ESPN2 with the winner playing for the 2013 national championshipon Saturday (Dec. 21).
