AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard Jase Febres scored a game-high 23 points and sophomore guard Courtney Ramey added a career-high 20 to lead the Texas men’s basketball team to an 87-76 win Saturday over Central Michigan at the Frank Erwin Center.
With the victory, the Longhorns improved their record to 9-1, their best 10-game start in the five seasons in which Shaka Smart has been UT’s head coach. Central Michigan fell to 7-4 on the season.
His points were not [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]the only season high for Febres, who also set a new standard for his junior campaign by connecting on seven of 10 shots from behind the three-point line. His career high for three-pointers in a game is eight, which he hit last year against Iowa State.
Ramey, meanwhile, supplemented his scoring output by operating the offense efficiently, handing out six assists without coughing up a single turnover.
Junior guard Matt Coleman scored 12 points and tied his career with seven rebounds, the same total he had Jan. 1, 2018 at Iowa State.
Febres cleared the 20-point plateau for the first time this season, and the fourth in his career. Saturday’s game was his fifth double-figure scoring game of the season, and the 23rd of his career.
The 87 points were a season high for UT, which outscored the Chippewas, 51-34, in the second half. The Horns also established new season highs for three-point field goals (14), three-point percentage (.560), free throws made (19) and attempted (31), rebounds (42) and rebounding margin (plus-16). After falling behind, 27-18, Texas also mounted its largest comeback of the season.
The Longhorns have a week before their next game, which will be Saturday, Dec. 21 at Providence in a game that can be viewed on Fox.
