Horns Illustrated Week in Review (April 15th-22nd)

Baseball

The Texas Baseball team hosted Texas Pan American and West Virginia in Austin this week. The Longhorns won two games and lost two games.

Texas opened the week with a 6-1 victory over Texas Pan American on Tuesday. Josh Urban (1-0) picked up his first career win after pitching 4.2 innings and giving up one run on four hits and struck out three. Ty Marlow went 2 for 3 from the plate and picked up two RBI to lead the Longhorn’s offense.

Parker French put in another quality start on Friday against West Virginia, but Texas was unable to give him the necessary run support. The Longhorns lost 1-0 to the Mountaineers in the eighth inning after WVU’s Bobby Boyd hit a sacrifice fly to score Billy Fleming. French pitched 7.2 innings and allowed one run on five hits and a walk and struck out a career-high seven batters.

The Longhorns responded on Saturday against the Mountaineers with a dominant 12-0 victory. Ty Marlow and Jacob Felts recorded four RBI each. Felts hit a three-run homerun in the fourth inning out to left field—the second of his career. Dillon Peters (4-2) threw eight shutout innings and struck out six batters. The Longhorns recorded a season-high 14 hits, while Peters held West Virginia to four hits. Peters has given up one run in his last three starts—a 0.36 ERA.

The Longhorns (21-17, 5-10 Big 12) lost their final game of their series against West Virginia on Sunday, losing 6-3 in extra innings. Texas pitcher Corey Knebel…[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]recorded the loss for the Longhorns after giving up three runs on five hits and three walks over 3.1 innings pitched.

WVU’s Jacob Rice went 3 for 5 from the plate and registered three RBI and a homerun in the game. The Mountaineer’s Billy Fleming hit the go-ahead run in the 10th on a RBI single.

The Texas baseball team returns to action on Tuesday against Houston at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, before they head to Waco for a three-game series against Baylor on Friday.

Softball

The No. 6 Texas Softball team dropped two out of three in their series against No. 1 Oklahoma this week.

The Longhorns opened the series with a 6-1 loss to the Sooner on Friday. Brianna Turang led the Sooner’s offense, going 2 for 3 from the plate with a pair of runs batted in. Oklahoma’s pitcher, Keilani Ricketts, recorded the win for the Sooners. Ricketts allowed one runs on six hits and two walks, and struck out 15 batters over 7.0 innings pitched. Texas’ Karina Scott picked up her fifth homerun of the season in the second inning.

The Longhorns evened the series on Saturday with a 4-2 victory over Oklahoma—their first victory over a No.1 ranked team since 2006. Taylor Thom led the Longhorn’s offense, going 1 for 2 from the plate and registered a pair of runs batted in.

The Longhorns came up short against the Sooners on Sunday, losing 5-3 at Red McCombs Field. Oklahoma’s Shelby Pendley led the Sooner’s offense with two solo homeruns. Texas had a chance to tie the game in the seventh inning with the tying run on second, but the Sooners held on to take the win and the series.

The Texas softball team returns to action on Friday in a three-game road series against Texas Tech.

Men’s Golf

The Texas Men’s Golf team won the 2013 Big 12 Championship this week at Prairie Dunes Country Club on Wednesday. The conference championship is the Longhorn’s fourth overall and first win since 2004. Freshman Brandon Stone won the individual Big 12 Golf Championship after shooting 70-67-73.

Brandon Stone, Cody Gribble, and Toni Hakalu each earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Tournament Team.

The Men’s Golf team will play in the one of six NCAA Regional Championship events starting May 16th.

Women’s Golf 

Texas senior Madison Pressel will compete this week at the North Texas LPGA Shootout at Las Colinas Country Club. The event starts on Thursday, April 25th and will be Madison Pressel’s amateur debut in the LPGA tour.

Men’s Tennis

The Texas Men’s Tennis team dropped a Big 12 conference game against Baylor 6-1, but picked up a 5-2 win over Texas Tech.

Baylor’s Tony Lupieri defeated Sudanwa Sitaram 6-3, 6-4, in the match clinching singles match.

On Senior Day against Texas Tech, seniors Daniel Whitehead and Ben Chen helped the Longhorns to victory by winning their singles matches. Lloyd Glasspool defeated Tech’s Felipe Soares, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 in the deciding singles match.

The Longhorns will take on Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championships on Thursday, April 26th.

Women’s Tennis

The Texas Women’s Tennis team lost to Baylor, but defeated TCU this week.

In the 4-3 loss to the Baylor Bears on Friday, Alex Leatu defeated UT’s Lina Padegimaite 6-1, 1-6, 6-1, in the deciding singles match.

The Longhorns defeated TCU 4-3 on Sunday. UT’s Noel Scott defeated Monika Sirilova, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, in the deciding singles match.

The Longhorns will play Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals on Thursday, April 26th at 3 pm CT.

Track and Field (Longhorn Invitational) 

The Texas Men and Women’s Track and Field teams competed in a non-scored meet called the Longhorn Invitational over the weekend as they gear up for the Big 12 Championships.

Victories by Ryan Crouser in the shot put and Will Spence in the discuss were highlighted in Texas’ final meet of the regular season. Crouser won first and tossed the shot-put 20.10 meters, but already holds the nation’s best throw at 20.43 meters.

The Texas men finished with nine first-place finishes at the Longhorn Invitational.

The Texas women had five first-place finishes and also finished with 12 top-three finishes at the meet.

The Men and Women’s teams will compete in the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Waco, Texas starting May 3rd.

Longhorn MVP

This week’s MVP goes to the—Texas Men’s Golf team and Brandon Stone—for their 2013 Big 12 Championship win this week, and Stone for winning the individual Big 12 Golf Championship. It was the Longhorn’s fourth championship overall and first since 2004.

Honorable Mention

This week’s Honorable Mention goes to—Texas RHP Dillon Peters—for his 0.36 ERA over his last three starts. Over 24 2/3 innings, Peters has given up one run. Peters also has a 0.98 ERA against Big 12 teams this season.
