Horns Illustrated Week in Review (April 29th-May 6th)

Baseball

The Texas Baseball team defeated Prairie View A&M in a 1-0 victory on Tuesday, but lost their Big 12 series against Kansas State over the weekend and are at risk of missing the Big 12 Tournament.

On Tuesday, catcher Jeremy Montalbano drove in the only run of the game in the seventh inning. With two outs, Montalbano hit a single to left and drove in Jacob Felts to give the Longhorns the victory. Four Texas pitchers combined for the shutout. Travis Duke was credited with his fourth win of the season, while Ste Lunsford (1-3) was handed the loss for Prairie View A&M. Cory Knebel picked up his eighth save of the season after pitching a perfect ninth.

Texas was looking to win their first Big 12 series of the season versus Kansas State, but came up short on Sunday in a 6-3 loss to the Wildcats.

On Friday, the Longhorns lost a tough game, 3-2, in the eighth inning when Kansas State’s Ross Kivett hit a two-run triple. Parker French was given the start for the Longhorns, but did not factor in the decision after pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits and four walks. Travis Duke (4-1) was credited with the loss after relieving French in the eighth inning. Texas was ahead in the sixth inning after Jacob Felt’s RBI-single drove in Erich Weiss, but the Longhorns weren’t able to hold on.

Texas returned on Saturday to even the series against the Wildcats with a 6-3 victory. Kansas State recorded a season-high five errors in the game and allowed the Longhorns to capitalize on their mistakes. Texas struck early in the first inning and took a 2-0 lead. Erich Weiss led the Texas batters with a two RBI game, while Madison Carter recorded his first triple of the season. Dillon Peters picked up his fifth win of the season and tied a career-high in strikeouts with seven. Ty Marlow was credited with his second save of the season after Cory Knebel was suspended for the series.

The Longhorns returned on Sunday, but couldn’t keep the momentum going and lost 9-3. Texas (24-22, 6-14 Big 12) committed four errors in the game and helped the Wildcats take the series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Kansas State’s Mitch Meyer and Blair DeBord each recorded a two RBI game. Nathan Thornhill (2-6) recorded the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and three walks over five and one-third innings pitched. Mark Payton went 2 for 4 from the plate and continued his streak—reaching base safely in 35 straight games.

Texas will play a double-header against Texas Southern on Saturday, May 11. The first game starts at 1 p.m. and the second game is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Men’s Basketball

The Texas Men’s Basketball team released a majority of their non-conference schedule for the 2013-2014 season. The Longhorns will play in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic. In the Regional Round they will play Stephen F. Austin. Other teams that the Longhorns might face in the Championship Rounds are: BYU, Depaul, or Wichita State. Texas will play UT Arlington, @Temple, Texas State, @North Carolina, Michigan State, and Rice in the regular season…[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]

Softball

The No. 6 Texas Softball team lost their series against Oklahoma State in Stillwater over the weekend.

The Longhorns lost a pitching battle, 1-0, on Friday in nine innings and lost again on Saturday in a close game, 2-1. Blaire Luna recorded the loss on Saturday after pitching six innings and allowing two runs on four hits and four walks. Oklahoma State took the lead early in the first inning. Erin Shireman drove in the lone run for the Longhorns.

The Longhorns returned on Sunday and defeated the Cowboys 7-2 and improved to 43-8 overall and 13-4 in conference play. Taylor Thom hit a grand slam in the third inning—her third grand slam of the season. Thom’s grand slam makes her the tenth player in NCAA history to hit three or more grand slams in a season. Blaire Luna picked up her 25th win of the season after striking out 14 batters and allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over seven innings pitched.

The Longhorns return to action on Sunday, May 12 against Baylor at 1 p.m. for their last regular season game.

Men’s Golf

After winning their fourth Big 12 Championship last month, the Texas Men’s Golf team was given a No. 1 seed in the NCAA South Central Regional Championship at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from the six regionals will advance to the May 28-June 2 NCAA Championship at Capital City Club in Atlanta. The Men’s Golf team won the 2012 NCAA championship last season—the program’s third NCAA championship—and will look to repeat this season.

Women’s Golf 

The Texas Women’s Golf team has earned an at-large berth in the NCAA East Regional Championship in Auburn, Ala. on May 9 -11. The Texas Women will look to advance to their fifth NCAA Championship appearance in the last six seasons.

Men’s Tennis

The Texas Men’s Tennis team will make its 22nd consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship on May 10 in College Station. Texas will play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the First Round on Friday at 11 a.m.

Women’s Tennis

After winning their ninth Big 12 Championship, the Texas Women’s Tennis team will make its 31st consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship on May 11 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Texas will play William and Mary in the first round at 8 a.m. CT.

Track and Field

The Texas Men’s Track and Field team won its fifth Big 12 Outdoor title in Waco in the three-day meet. Texas finished with 146.50 points and edged rival Oklahoma, who finished with 133 points. This is the third time in school history that Texas has won the Big 12 indoor and outdoor titles. Ryan Crouser set a school and meet record in the shot put with a throw of 21.09 meters. Trevor Van Ackerson helped the Longhorns as well after he won the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The Texas Women’s Track and Field team finished in second place in the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Waco. The Women finished with 145 points, but were beaten by Kansas who finished with 158 points. The Longhorns had three individual title winners in Shanay Briscoe, Sara Sutherland, and Morgan Snow. Briscoe won her third-consecutive outdoor title in the high jump with a clearance of 1.78 meters. Sara Sutherland won her first title in the 1,500 meters. Morgan Snow won her first title in the sprint hurdles. The Longhorns also posted six second-place finishes at the meet.

Longhorn MVP

This week’s MVP goes to the—Texas Men’s Track and Field team—for winning the Big 12 Outdoor Title—the fifth outdoor tournament title overall and the third time in school history Texas has won the indoor and outdoor titles.

Honorable Mention

This week’s Honorable Mention goes to—Ryan Crouser— for setting a school and meet record in the shot put with a throw of 21.09 meters.

This week’s second Honorable Mention goes to—Taylor Thom—who hit a grand slam in the third inning in the Longhorns’ victory over Oklahoma State on Sunday. It was Thom’s third grand slam of the season. The grand slam makes her the tenth player in NCAA history to hit three or more grand slams in a season.
