Track and Field
Former and current Texas Longhorn athletes competed over the weekend in the USA Outdoor Championships at Drake University and represented the University of Texas strongly.
Olympian Sanya Richards-Ross finished sixth in the 400m with a time of 51.92 on Saturday.
Michelle Carter set a American record in the Shot put with a toss of 20.24 meters.
Chauntae Bayne finished third in the 200m with a time of 22.39.
Courtney Okolo won the 400m on Saturday with a career-best time of 51.04.
Former Longhorn Leo Manzano finished second in the 1,500 meters at the USA Outdoor Championships. The two-time Olympian finished with a time of 3:45.35.
Danielle Dowie and Melissa Gonzalez both qualified for the World Championships in their respective events.
Dowie competed in Kingston, Jamaica this weekend at the Jamicia National Senior Championships. Dowie won the 400m hurdles with a career-best time of 54.94.
In the USA Outdoor Championships, former Texas Longhorn Gonzalez placed third in the 100m with a time of 10.91.
After announcing that Bubba Thornton would retire in August, the Texas Athletic Department did not waste any time in naming a new head coach to take over for coach Thornton. On Thursday, the Longhorns made an in-program hire and promoted associate head coach of the men's track team Mario Sategna to head coach of the program. Sategna will be in charge of both the Men's and Women's Track and Field programs.
Women's Athletics
The Texas Women's Athletic program finished fourth in the Capital One Cup Final Standings. North Carolina won the 2012-2013 Capital One Cup with 140 points. Texas finished with 92 points. The points were earned when the Texas Volleyball team won the NCAA Championship, the Softball team finished third in the final USA Today/NFCA Division I Softball poll, and the swimming and diving team placed ninth in team standings at the NCAA Championship meet.
