Men's Basketball

The University of Texas Men's Basketball team earned the No. 3 seed in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship and will play No. 6 seed West Virginia on Thursday in the quarterfinal round in Kansas City at 8:30 p.m. CT. The entire Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship also will be televised either regionally or nationally by the Big 12 Network, ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.

The Longhorns played West Virginia twice in the regular season and came away with wins in both of their meetings with the Mountaineers. In their away game against the Mountaineers, Texas came away with a 80-69 victory on Jan. 13. At home in the Erwin Center, Texas defeated West Virginia 88-71 on Feb. 15.

Should the Longhorns advance on Thursday, the semifinal round will be played on Friday, March 14 around 8:30 p.m. CT.

The Longhorns had several of their players earn spots on the Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Awards Teams. Head Coach Rick Barnes was also named Big 12 Coach of the Year for the fourth time (1999, 2003, 2008, 2014) in his career after leading Texas to a 22-9 overall record and 11-7 record in the Big 12.

Junior forward Jonathan Holmes was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team. Sophomore guard Javan Felix, freshman guard Isaiah Taylor, and sophomore center Cameron Ridley were named to the All-Big 12 Honorable Mention Team. Ridley also earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Defensive Team with teammate and sophomore guard Demarcus Holland. Taylor also earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team.

Texas lost a close game to Texas Tech, 59-53, in Lubbock on Saturday, in their final regular season game of the year. The Longhorns couldn't stop the Red Raiders from going on a 16-3 run in the second half and ended up losing, despite having a lead for much of the game. Martez Walker came off the bench to lead the Longhorns in scoring with 13 points. Cam Ridley finished the game with 12 points.

 

Baseball

The No. 10 Texas Baseball team hosted Hawaii in a four-game series and won three out of four games over the Rainbow Warriors. In the series opener, Texas rallied back to score three unanswered runs and won 3-2 after Hawaii took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jacob Felts, Andy McGuire, and Collin Shaw each finished the game with an RBI.

In the Longhorns' double header on Saturday, Texas lost 6-1 in the first game after falling behind 6-0 after three innings. In the second game of the double header, Texas fell behind to the Rainbow Warriors again 2-0 early, but scored three unanswered runs to win 3-2. Kacy Clemens drove in the game-winning run in the eighth inning on a single up the middle. Mark Payton finished with two RBIs in the game.

In the final game of the series Texas won 4-1 behind C.J. Hinojosa who went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and drew a walk.

Texas plays Texas State on Tuesday, March 11 in San Marcos. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ESPN 3.

 

Women's Basketball

The University of Texas Women's Basketball team was knocked out of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship by No. 7 West Virginia, 67-60, in the semifinal round on Sunday evening.

The Longhorns had three players finish with double-digit scoring. Senior Chassidy Fussell finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Nekia Jones finished with 14 points and four rebounds. Celina Rodrigo finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

The Longhorns came close to tying the game several times in the second half, but were unable to get the final push they needed to upset West Virginia.

Texas will await the seeding announcement during the NCAA Selection Show on March 17 at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
