Horns Illustrated Week in Review (May 20th-27th)

Softball

The Texas Softball team swept Florida State in the NCAA Austin Super Regionals over the weekend to advance to their first Women’s College World Series since 2006. The Longhorns were scheduled to play Game 1 on Friday, but the game was moved to Saturday due to a rain delay.

On Saturday, the Longhorns rallied from a two-run deficit to beat the Seminoles, 3-2. Karina Scott led the Longhorns at the plate with two RBIs and a double. Blaire Luna pitched a complete game and struck out 10 batters.

The Longhorns returned on Sunday needing one win to advance to their fifth Women’s College World Series appearance. Blaire Luna and company took care of business in Game 2 to send Texas to Oklahoma City. Luna pitched a no-hitter and struck out 13 batters. It was the third postseason no-hitter in school history and Luna’s fourth no-hitter this year. The Longhorns scored four runs on three-extra base hits in the fifth inning. Karina Scott and Taylor Thom each homered to lead the Longhorn hitters.

The Longhorns will face 5th-seeded Arizona State on Thursday, May 30 at 7 p.m in the first round of the Women’s College World Series.

Men’s Golf

The Texas Men’s Golf team is set to compete on May 28 in the NCAA National Championships at Capital City Club Crabapple Course in Milton, Ga….[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]

Texas earned the 4th seed overall in the Championships after a third place finish at the Fayetteville Regional that secured their spot at the NCAA Championships for the seventh straight time.

The format of the National Championship per TexasSports.com is:

The 75th edition of the national championship takes place over six days, beginning May 28 when the 30 teams battle in 54 holes of stroke play, 18 holes each day over three days, followed by three days of match play competition culminating in the national championship match Sunday, June 2.

The format for stroke play is each team fields five players, with the low four scores each day counting toward the team score. After 54 holes on Thursday, May 30, the individual national champion will be crowned, and the top eight schools in terms of team score are seeded for match play competition beginning Friday, May 31.

In team match play, each of the five players on a team plays a match against a counterpart on the opposing team. Each individual match is worth a point for his team, and the team with the most points after the five matches are completed advances to the next round. Quarterfinals matches are set for Friday, May 31, with semifinals on Saturday, June 1, and the championship match Sunday, June 2.

Texas won the National Championship in 2012 and will look to defend their title this year. The Longhorns have won three Championships total—1971, 1972, 2012.

Women’s Golf

The Texas Women’s Golf team finished their season with a 21st place finish in the NCAA Championships at Athens, Ga.

Bertine Strauss finished tied for 58th place overall at 14-over. Strauss led the Longhorns on the individual leaderboard for the second-consecutive year.

University of Southern California blew away the competition and won the Championship at 19-under. Duke finished second at 2-over.

Men’s Tennis

On May 27, Chris Camillone and David Holliner advanced to the NCAA Men’s Double Championships and attempted to win UT’s first NCAA doubles title since 1944.

In the finals, Camillone and Holliner lost a tough match against University of Virginia’s 4th-ranked Jarmere Jenkins and Mac Styslinger. The match came down to the final set, but the Longhorns lost, 6-4. Camillone/Holliner won the first set, 6-3, but dropped the second set, 6-2.

Comillone and Holliner were UT’s first double’s finalist since 1995. They defeated three consecutive top-5 ranked teams on their way to the final match.

Women’s Tennis

Freshman Breaunna Addison was defeated in the semifinals of the NCAA Women’s Singles Championships on Sunday afternoon in Urbana, Illinois. Addison lost 6-1, 6-1 and was knocked out by the defending NCAA singles champion Nicole Gibbs of Stanford. Addison was the first UT player to reach the singles semifinals since 1995.

Addison earned ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) singles All-American honors and finished 30-7 this season. She was the third player in Longhorn history to reach the NCAA singles semifinals.

Track and Field

The Texas Men’s Track and Field team competed in the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round at Mike Myers Stadium this weekend. Fifteen Longhorns qualified in nine events for a berth to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon on June 5-8.

Ryan Couser, Blake Jakobsson, Clint Harris, Ryan Dohner, Craig Lutz, Hayden Baillio, Will Spence, Zack Bilderback, Trevor Van Ackersen, Reese Watson, Patrick McGregor and Keiron Stewert all earned a spot in next month’s NCAA Outdoor meet.

The Texas Women’s Track and Field team also competed and qualified 12 entires across 10 events.

Chalonda Goodman, Courtney Okolo, Briana Nelson, Mia Behm, Morgan Snow, Danielle Dowie, Shanay Briscoe, Kaitlin Petrillose, Natasha Masterson, and two Relay teams all entered a spot in next month’s meet in Eugene.

Longhorn MVP

This week’s MVP goes to—Blaire Luna and the Texas Softball team—for sweeping Florida State in the Austin Super Regional this weekend and advancing to the first College World Series since 2006. Blaire Luna has been brillant this postseason. She holds a 4-0 record with a 0.97 ERA and 42 strikeouts over 29 innings.

Honorable Mention

This week’s Honorable Mention goes to—Chris Camillone, David Holliner and Breaunna Addison—for their success in the NCAA Championships this week. Camillone and Holliner advanced to the NCAA Men’s Double Championships after coming into the Championships unseeded. They took down three consecutive top-5 teams, including No.1 seed Tennessee on their way to the finals.

Addison reached the Women’s Singles semifinals after coming in as the 31st seed in the Championships. She was just the third Longhorn ever to reach the NCAA singles semifinals and the first since 1995.
