THE UT SAN ANTONIO Roadrunners have a quiet championship program within the ranks — their track & field teams. People neglect to mention these squads while discussing the Roadrunner athletic program, even though not one other team has demonstrated as much success — the mean and women hold 33 conference championships from indoor, outdoor and cross country competitions since their founding in 1982.

Southland Conference championships from 2006-2012 before joining the Western Athletic Conference this season.
Even with the change of conference, the Roadrunners managed to capture the 2013 WAC indoor championship title. The men took the No. 1 position after winning the mile (Mike Medrano), triple jump (Ronson Small) and high jump (Kerry Thompson). A victorious 1,600-meter relay of Nate Brunette, Darryl Wyrick, Joshua Smith and Christopher Hall rounded out the wins. Going into the final day of the meet, UTSA trailed longtime conference rivals UT Arlington by 19 points.
“I told the guys that if we executed and did what we were capable of, we could win — and the guys performed like we have the last seven years,” head coach Aaron Fox said. “Anytime they faced adversity, they stepped ip their game. The high jump and mile set the tone for the rest of the day.”
Fox earned WAC Coach of the Year honors for leading the Roadrunners to victory — his eighth consecutive mention. He won the previous seven awards in the Southland Conference. “My assistant coaches did an excellent job of recruiting and getting the team ready for the conference meet. All of our success wouldn’t be possible without their hard work and dedication to our program.” Fox said. “I also want to thank the senior class for carrying on our winning tradition.”
Following the NCAA indoor Championships, the Roadrunners turned their attention to capturing the WAC Outdoor Championship title. If they win the WAC outdoors, the Roadrunners will claim their second consecutive outdoor conference trophy.
