MANZANO MILE

MANZANOOLYMPIC silver medalist and former Long- horn Leo Manzano hosted the third-annual Manzano Mile at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin on March 23. The event fea- tured competitive mile races for ages 10 to 50+, a free kids’ 400-meter run, an open mile relay and a corporate/media mile relay.

The event promoted youth health and fitness, and a portion of the proceeds were donated to local charities through the Austin Community Foundation. “The support I’ve …

received from the people of Austin along the way has been phenomenal,” Manzano said. “It’s nice to come out and give back to the community.”

Manzano also stressed the importance of getting kids involved in competitive ath- letics. “Athletics takes time and dedication,” he added. “These are kids that stay out of trouble and are dedicated to what they do. Sports give them all kinds of opportunities.”

The event’s donations assist the High- land Lakes Track Club in Manzano’s home- town of Marble Falls, as well as support the Children’s Day in Marble Falls, and benefit several other Austin youth groups.

Fellow Olympian and Texas Alum Trey Hardee came to the event, along with many of Manzano’s coaches and supporters.

“We had a lot of support today, and every year it’s growing,” Manzano said. “This year was great, and we’re hoping next year it will be even bigger and better.”
