Men’s golf finishes 2nd in Gopher Invitational; Chervony places 3rd

MAPLE PLAIN, Minnesota — Senior Steven Chervony shot 73-68-67 to finish in third place individually and to help the No. 10 Texas men’s golf team finish second at the Gopher Invitational in Maple Plain, Minnesota.

UT shot a 2-under-par total of 850 (291-278-281) over the three rounds to finish three strokes behind tournament champion Oklahoma. Iowa finished a stroke behind the longhorns, followed by Arkansas (859) and Purdue and Minnesota, which tied for fifth with a three-round total of 864.

Freshman Pierceson Coody shot 38 pars over the three rounds — only one player in the tournament had more — en route to shooting 72-70-71 to finish ninth. Sophomore Drew Jones fired rounds of 78, 68 and 69 to finish tied for 17th.[place_ad_1]

Chervony’s third-place finish was the best of his UT career. Over the span of three rounds, he first 14 birdies, the third-highest total among all players in the field.

Junior Nick Costello shot 73-72-74 (6 over par) to tie for 32nd, while freshman Parker Coody finished at 11 over par to tie for 61st.

In the individual competition, Chervony’s three-round total of 208 left him behind only William Buhl of Arkansas and Oklahoma’s Blaine Hale, who shared medalist honors by shooting 206.

Texas finished second by three strokes to Oklahoma, while the Sooners’ Blaine Hale and Arkansas’ William Buhl shared medalist honors.

The Longhorns will resume their fall season at the Nike Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club from September 30 to October 2.
