Pierceson Coody becomes world’s top-ranked men’s golf amateur
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas men's golfer Pierceson Coody has accomplished plenty in his three years in Austin, but nothing compares to ascending to the pinnacle of amateur golf, which he did Wednesday.
He is the first Longhorn to hold the title since Cole Hammer did so in 2019. Coody, his brother Parker Coody and Hammer are three of five juniors on the UT roster.
Coody became the world's No. 1-ranked amateur for the first time in his career following top-three finishes at each of the Longhorns' last four tournaments.
Coody won the George Hannon Collegiate in Austin March 16, and followed that with runner-up finishes at both the N.I.T. and Aggie Invitational. He tied for third April 6 at the Calusa Cup.
Over the last month, Coody is averaging 69.08 strokes per round, and has shot par or better in 11 of his last 12 rounds. Over the last four tournaments, he is a combined 32 under par. He has finished in the top 10 in six of eight events in which he has competed this season.
Aside from his recent performances at the college level, Coody also has excelled on the world stage, advancing to the Round of 16 at the U.S Amateur Aug. 10-15. His two-stroke victory in 116th Trans-Mississippi Amateur etched his name into the record books alongside past winners like Jack Nicklaus, Bryson DeChambeau and former Longhorn Ben Crenshaw.
Coody and Texas will compete April 26-28 in the Big 12 Championships in Hutchinson, Kan. The Longhorns have won the title at Prairie Dunes Golf Club four times, most recently in 2017.
