AUSTIN, Texas – In his first collegiate start, Myles Turner posted 16 points, while Jonathan Holmes recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the No. 11/10 Texas Men's Basketball team defeated the Rice Owls 66-55 on Monday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center.

The Horns (11-2) used a 13-4 run in the last 5:52, with points coming from five different players, to pull away from the Owls (3-8). Texas recorded its 10th straight win against Rice and improved to a perfect 9-0 versus the Owls during the Rick Barnes era.

Turner shot 6-of-7 from the field and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe. His miss from the line in the second half snapped a streak of 22 straight made free throws that spanned seven games dating back to the UT Arlington contest on Dec. 2. In the first half, Turner had nine points on 3-of-3 shooting in 11 minutes of action.

Holmes' 12 points put him at 999 points in his career. He will look to become the 34th player in program history to join the 1,000-point club on Saturday at Texas Tech. Javan Felix added 10 points for the Longhorns.

Texas finished with 38 points in the paint and outscored the Owls, 18-4, in second chance points thanks to 18 offensive boards.

The first 19 points from the Longhorns were scored by six different players, but UT trailed the Owls 22-19 with 4:44 remaining. Texas would then use a 10-0 run, led by seven points from Turner, to take a 29-22 lead at the break. The Texas defense held Rice scoreless for the final 4:44 of the opening half.

With just under six minutes remaining in the game, the Owls went on a 5-0 run to pull within two (53-51), before Texas responded with 10 unanswered points to increase the lead to 61-51.

Seth Gearhart led the Owls with 24 points, including 19 in the second half, on 8-of-13 shooting and 4-of-8 from deep.

The Longhorns begin Big 12 Conference play when they travel to Lubbock to face the Red Raiders on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 1 pm CT, and the contest will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
