CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The No. 15 Texas men’s tennis team improved to 10-5 by rolling to a 4-0 win over Southern Miss in the final of the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.

Texas head coach Michael Center said his gratification from the event was not just because of the victory, but also because the Longhorns[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level1)] met the expectations heaped upon them when the they entered the tournament.

“We had a good showing today, and I thought the guys really played hard,” Center said. “A lot of guys contributed this weekend. It was a great test for us to come down here and be the top seed and get the job done.”

The Longhorns won two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Senior Michael Reichmann and sophomore Adrian Ortiz knocked off USM’s Daniel Merker and Tarun Surat, 6-3, in the top doubles match, while sophomore John Mee and freshman Harrison Scott won the third over Rakshit Rishi and Jorman Reyes by the same score.

Junior George Goldhoff won the top singles match, 6-1, 6-1, over USM’s Wen-Po Tseng, Scott topped Surat at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3, and Reichmann lost just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Merker. Because those matches meant UT had clinched the match, the other three singles matchups were suspended.

Center said the victory makes him feel good about his team as the Longhorns prepare to face some stout non-conference opponents, starting next weekend at San Diego, before getting into the Big 12 part of their schedule.

“We played well in each match,” Center said. “We’ll get ready to make a little push, get ready for this last part of the season with a few more tough non-conference matches, and then some Big 12 matches coming up. Overall, I’m really pleased.”
