No. 2 Texas plays championship volleyball to sweep Oklahoma 3-0
AUSTIN, Texas — It is like going to a party that you will never forget, will tell your friends about, and you’ll want to come back for more. Imagine walking into a large room packed with people (99% wearing something from here) who are jumping, singing, and going out of their minds with ‘we Are TEXAS’ every time Texas is volleying the ball that ends in a massive thunder dome power shot for a point to which the announcer says, ‘POINT TEXAS,’ and the crowd responds back with, ‘POINT TEXAS’. It is amazing and it happened 75 times.
Oh, yeah back to the match. Texas sweeps Oklahoma 3-0 in a show of power, poise, precision, and focus. Texas, now 20-1, looks like what you would envision a championship team would look like on the volleyball court.
If Texas played Louisville next would they be ready? Coach Elliott responded, “Yeah, I think we would be ready to play anybody right now. I think obviously, we got one of the better teams in the country, and I think it'd be a really good match. It would be a lot of fun to play.
Let’s talk about power. Skylar Fields brings the rain with 12 kills, four digs, and one block while hitting .333. Asjia O’Neal delivered nine kills, five blocks and three digs. Logan Eggleston, who we got to interview after the match) contributed nine kills, seven digs, and three aces.
Then you had Molly Phillips who had eight kills on 13 attempts hitting .538 and three digs. Brionne Butler contributed with five kills and two blocks.
For those unfamiliar with volleyball lingo, let’s define the term kill.
What is a kill in volleyball? According to the NCAA, a kill (K) is awarded to a player any time an attack is unreturnable by the opposition. A kill leads directly to a point. (Insert announcer saying POINT TEXAS and the crowd going mad)
Jhenna Gabriel played a key role, and always does, with 31 assists, four digs, three blocks and one service ace. Nalani Iosia had the most Longhorns digs with 13, plus three service aces.
Fans showed up to support (and party with) Texas Longhorns Volleyball to the tune of 4,422 at Gregory Gym. It was the third largest all-time and seventh largest in Texas Volleyball program history.
