No. 7/9 Texas Women’s Basketball Win 2022 Big 12 Tournament Championship

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For the first time since 2003, the No. 7/9 Texas Women’s Basketball have won the Phillips 66 2022 Big 12 Tournament Championship over No. 4 Baylor 67-58. The two teams had faced each other twice this season with Baylor winning both times. For Texas a third time was a charm after Texas set the tone of the game in the first five minutes.

Coach Schaefer said after the game, “First of all, just couldn't be more proud of my team. We came here to win a championship, and I think you saw today some really determined kids. I think these young ladies were absolutely not going to be denied. They're not intimidated. They're not afraid. They had a warrior mentality.”

The last time Texas Women’s Basketball won the Big 12 Tournament Championship was in 2003 during the Hall of Fame coach Jody Conradt era. In a show of support, Conradt and CoSIDA Hall of Fame Chris Plonsky were at the game and sat directly behind the team and coach Schaefer.

Texas improved to 26-6 on the season and will go to the NCAA tournament with an 11-game winning streak, the longest since 2016-2017 season, plus broke a 13-game losing streak to Baylor.

Texas believed they won the game in the first five minutes even though Baylor was up by one point at the end of five minutes in the game. Listen in to what the players believed.

We Knew We Had Them by Horns Illustrated

Immediately after the Big 12 Championship game was over, Texas flew back home. On the plane learned of their selection to the NCAA tournament. They landed and immediately came to talk with local media, albeit exhausted, but fired up for the win. Horns Illustrated got a chance to ask the team questions. This was one of them.

Freshman Rori Harmon, Big 12 Freshman of the Year, was named Big 12 Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Harmon scored 66 points in the three tournament games, 50 points without a single turnover in the last two games.

Senior Lauren Ebo scored 35 points and 18 rebounds in the tournament and was selected, along with Harmon to the All-Tournament Team.

After the celebration, Texas immediately boarded a plane back to Austin, Texas and were in-flight when announced they were selected as the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament to play host at the Frank Erwin Center to No. 15-seed Fairfield (25-6), No. 10-seed Arkansas (1813), and No. 7-seed Utah (20-11).

Texas will play first on Mar. 18 (Fri) at 7 p.m.
