Piperi propelled the shot put to a personal best 69-3 ¼ feet to capture the crown during the first day of the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium. His throw was the third-best shot put in Texas Track and Field history, behind only Ryan Crouser, who won the national title in 2014 and went on to win the 2016 Olympic Gold Medal in shot put.

On top of Piperi’s championship showing, four more Texas athletes performed well Wednesday to advance on to Friday’s finals.

Sophomore Micaiah Harris broke his own school record with a time of 20.09 in the 200m prelims, besting his record-setting time for just two weeks ago. The record time he set at the NCAA West Prelims broke a 32-year old UT record, and now Harris has the top two spots in UT history.

Jonathan Jones also earned a spot in the 400m finals with his showing Wednesday, finishing second in his semifinal race. He also broke a longstanding UT record two weeks ago by taking over the top spot that was held for 27 years.

In the 1500m, Sam Worley came in at 3:46.43 to claim second place and to make it onto the finals on Friday. Worley sported the fifth fastest time in the nation this year after coming in fifth at the championships a season ago.

Alex Rogers took third place in the 300m steeplechase at 8:43.09 to earn his spot for Friday.

Furthermore, John Rice, Trevor Danielson and Steffin McCarter all had strong showings on Wednesday representing Texas but were unable to advance on to Friday.

Day 2 of the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships continue Thursday at 1 pm with the 110-meter hurdles and last on through until the 4×400-meter relay begins at 10:18 pm.
