SPORTyler and the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce announced the creation of the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award at the 7th Annual Kick-Off Luncheon at UT Tyler, Aug. 28. The award, beginning in 2013, will be given to the top senior offensive player in Division I college football who illustrates “integrity, drive, determination, achievement in the face of adversity and tenacity to persist.” The award’s organization will bring the four finalists each year to Tyler for the award presentation.

High School in 1974 before joining the Texas Longhorns under legendary coach Darrell K. Royal. In 1977, his senior year, Campbell led the nation with 1,744 yards and 19 touchdowns and won the Longhorn’s first Heisman Award. He was subsequently drafted first overall by the Houston Oilers in the 1978 NFL draft, which led to an eight-year career.
Since his career ended, Campbell has struggled with many physical ailments and underwent a knee surgery earlier this year, but says he’s currently pain free. HBO and NFL Films are currently working on a documentary on Campbell, which is expected to be released later this year.
