HAWKINS, a second-year transfer from Northwest Mississippi Community College (Miss.), enrolled at Texas in spring 2012. He entered the 2012 season atop the depth chart at left tackle and remained there throughout the year, playing 12 games and starting 11.[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]
Though big (6’5,” 310 pounds), Hawkins struggled with adjusting to the speed of the college game. He improved throughout the season and by the time the Alamo Bowl came around, Hawkins could identify things much quicker in pass protection and was more balanced on the edge. He became more adept at getting to the second level and engaging linebackers when uncovered on the weak side.
Hawkins’ downfield block on the left corner sprung Marquise Goodwin on the big reverse touchdown in Texas’ Alamo Bowl win against Oregon State. Some say Hawkins would be better suited as a guard or at center, but as the season starts he’ll likely still protect quarterback David Ash’s blind side.
