AFTER WAVERING on his decision to jump to the NFL, ‘Magic’ Mike Davis will return for his final year with the Longhorns. Davis had 57 catches for 939 yards and [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] seven touchdowns last season and caught 11 passes longer than 30 yards — good for No. 3 in the Big 12. He had just three games in 2012 where he averaged fewer than 10 yards per catch.
With the Longhorns moving to an up-tempo offense this season, Davis should become the featured deep-ball threat in an offense committed to putting more points on the board.
“Mike can be a great player,” head coach Mack Brown said. “He’s talented, he can catch, he’s tough and he’s smart. Mike has to be the go-to receiver on our team.”
Davis is a two-time member of the Biletnikoff Award watch list and was a second-team All-Big 12 selection in 2012. He ranks seventh on both the Texas career receptions list (149) and career receiving yards chart (2,026) and owns seven career 100-yard receiving games (tied for sixth in school history).
Davis posted a Texas freshman single-season record 47 receptions for 478 yards (No. 3 on the freshman single-season list) and two touchdowns in 2010. He’s one of only three players in school history to register multiple 100-yard receiving games as a freshman.
If Davis has a huge year — and he came back to do just that —Texas will reap the rewards, as he’s one of the most important players on the team.
