Former University of Texas golfer Jordan Spieth capped off one of the most impressive seasons in PGA history by winning the FedEx Cup in Atlanta, giving him five tour victories this season.
More importantly, the victory allowed Spieth [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] to reclaim the top spot in the PGA rankings, passing Jason Day and Rory McIlroy in the process to ascend to the top spot.
The win was Spieth’s fifth of the season, tying Day for the most among PGA players this year. They have the same number of victories, but Spieth won two majors, while Day won one.
The jump to the top of the world rankings marked the second time this year that Spieth has been ranked as the best player in the world. UT men’s golf coach John Fields extended congratulations on behalf of himself and his wife, Pearl, as did interim men’s athletic director Mike Perrin.
“Pearl and I are so pleased for Jordan, his family, his team and the entire Longhorn Nation,” Fields said. “Jordan’s incredible play, his character and his Burnt Orange blood give all of us significant pride. Huge congratulations and Hook ‘Em Horns to Jordan Spieth!”
“Jordan, the entire Longhorn Nation joins me in congratulating you on a great victory today to cap off a great year,” Perrin said. “I look forward to extending congratulations in person when we can meet. Until then, Hook ‘Em Horns!”
