Texas Appears on Top LB’s Short List

Being a five-star prospect and top-rated outside linebacker in the 2015 class gives Malik Jefferson every right to tweet a list of his top seven suitors, considering every school in the nation is likely pursuing his commitment. And, according to this tweet, Texas is among those seven schools, complete with a small Longhorn illustration.
The list includes fellow Big 12 rivals Baylor, TCU and Oklahoma, as well as Texas A&M, LSU and UCLA, all national powerhouses. In fact, of the teams appearing on the Jefferson’s list, Texas has the worst record, yet its defense ranks third behind LSU and Baylor.
Jefferson, who is a senior at Mesquite Poteet, recorded 93 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in 2014.
Charlie Strong’s background as a defensive coordinator, his defensive acumen, and his penchant for bringing out strong performances on that side of the ball undoubtedly play a big role in Texas appearing on Jefferson’s short list.
In fact, Sanjay Kirpalani of Bleacher Report, believes that Texas has the inside track in obtaining Jefferson’s commitment.
“Strong has strengthened his reputation as one of college football’s top defensive minds,” Kirpalani wrote. “Last year, Texas ranked No. 69 nationally in total defense. Through 11 games, Strong’s defense has improved that number to No. 28 nationally.
“With a clear need at his position, and the chance to play for a noted defensive mind such as Strong, Texas gives Jefferson the best opportunity to make an early impact and reach his full potential at the college level.”
