AUSTIN, Texas — Texas women’s basketball associate head coach Tina Thompson is among the candidates for induction in 2018 to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The finalists from the North American and Women’s committees will be announced [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]during a Feb. 17 press conference in Los Angeles that will be held during NBA All-Star Weekend.
No in her third season on the UT staff, Thompson was the first pick in the inaugural WNBA Draft, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a four-time WNBA champion while playing for the Houston Comets.
Thompson, who coaches the Longhorns’ post players, was a member of the WNBA All-Decade team and an eight-time All-WNBA team honoree and a nine-time WNBA All-Star and became the league’s all-time scoring leader Aug. 8, 2010.
Thompson, who also played for the Los Angeles Sparks and the Seattle Storm, retired in 2013 with a league-record 7,488 points in 496 games played (15.1 points per game) and remains the league’s second-leading all-time scorer behind Diana Taurasi (who has 7,867 points).
She helped Team USA win gold medals in the 2004 Olympics in Athens and again four years later in Beijing.
The USC graduate helped Texas center Imani Boyette earn All-America honors from both the Associated Press and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, and helped Kelsey Lang earn Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors in 2016-17.
