Texas Baseball #17 Ivan Melendez from El Paso, Texas, a 2022 Golden Spikes Award semi-finalist, in the first inning of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship game at Globe Life Field hit the third pitch over the wall in right center for his 29th home run of the season to break a University of Texas school record.

Texas Baseball (42-19) falls to OU, 8-1 in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. Before the game was over the NCAA announced that Texas was selected as NCAA Regional host at UFCU Disch-Falk Field for the second-consecutive season and the 28th time ever.

Oklahoma's pitching proved to much for Texas striking out 16 of the 33 batters Texas sent to the plate.

Texas troubles started in the third inning after Travis Sthele was called for a balk pitch that scored OU's second run. Coach Pierce had a heated conversation with the umpire, then called time to go to the mound to talk with Sthele. While at the mound, Pierce and home plate umpire had more words after plate umpire walked to the mound and appeared to get into Pierce's face. OU scored eight runs in the third that would secure the win and championship.

Texas had only four hits and one run from Melendez' home run. Murphy Stehly doubled, Austin Todd, and Trey Faltine both had hits. Texas used five pitches.

I like exploring the why's and have three objectives. First is to give value to those who would spend time with our content. Second is to be respectful of others and for the opportunity to tell a positive story about all of the Texas Longhorns teams, players, and coaches regardless of their record. Lastly, to put wind in the sails of others using the Horns Illustrated platform. Life is GOOD!
