TEXAS BASEBALL PITCHER COREY KNEBEL SELECTED 39th OVERALL IN 2013 MLB DRAFT BY DETROIT TIGERS

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Baseball junior pitcher Corey Knebel (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown HS) was selected tonight by the Detroit Tigers in the Competitive Balance Round A (39th overall) of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft.

The Longhorns’ closer led the team with nine saves this season with a 3-4 record and 3.38 ERA. In 40 innings, Knebel allowed 25 hits and 15 earned runs with 18 walks and 51 strikeouts. Opponents hit just .179 against him. He is second all-time in Texas Baseball history with 37 career saves. During his three years at Texas, he has a 10-11 record with a 2.07 ERA and 180 strikeouts in 169 1/3 innings with opponents hitting just .175 against him.

Incoming freshman pitcher/outfielder Trey Ball (New Castle, Indiana/New Castle HS) was selected seventh overall by the Boston Red Sox. No other incoming freshmen were drafted in the first two rounds of tonight’s draft (73 overall picks).
