LUBBOCK, Texas — Redshirt sophomore guard Andrew Jones tied his career high with 22 points to help the University of Texas men’s basketball team to a 68-58 road victory over No. 22/21 Texas Tech at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock.
The win was the fourth in a row for the Longhorns (18-11 overall, 8-8 in Big 12 games), who [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]have won consecutive games against teams ranked in the Associuated Press top 25 for the first time in six seasons after knockign off No. 20/19 West Virginia, 67-57, Monday in Austin. With the loss, Texas Tech dropped to 18-11 overall and 9-7 against Big 12 opponents.
Jones scored 14 of his 22 points before halftime. He shot 8-of-14 from the floor, including 3-of-8 from beyodn the three-point line.
Sophomore guard Courtney Ramey added 12 points for the Longhorns.
The Longhorns trailed the Red Raiders, 37-30, at halftime, but then outscored Tech, 38-21, after the intermission, thanks in large part to 63.6 percent shooting from the floor, including a trio of three-pointers on five attempts, and a stingy defense that allowed the Red Raiders to shoot just 36.0 percent from the field, including just two of 10 from long range. The Longhorns led by just two points, 60-58, before finishing the game on an 8-0 run.
The last time the Longhorns won at least four consecutive Big 12 games was in January and February 2014, when they won seven straight.
UT now has three victories this season over teams in the AP top 25. In addition to the victories this week over Tech and West Virginia, Texas also knocked off then-No. 23 Purdue, 70-66, Nov. 9.
The Longhorns outrebounded the Red Raiders, 30-23, and now have a 9-2 record in games in which they have won the battle of the boards.
Texas has a chance for a fifth consecutive victory at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Oklahoma, in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN2.
