Texas Men’s Golf Headlines Big 12 Conference Postseason Honors
IRVING, Texas -- The No. 13 Texas Men’s Golf team headlined the 2014 Big 12 Conference postseason awards as freshman Beau Hossler became the fifth-straight Longhorn to claim Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors and head coach John Fields was named Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive year, the league announced Thursday. Additionally, senior Toni Hakula and junior Kramer Hickok joined Hossler on the All-Big 12 Team.
Hossler tied for third place at his first Big 12 Championship after shooting a 288 at the 72-hole event over the weekend. The freshman has posted 19 par-or-better rounds on the year, including seven rounds in the 60s. Hossler has registered five top-10 finishes in 11 starts, including three over the last four events.
Hakula leads Texas with a 71.88 scoring average and six top-10 finishes this season. He recorded a season-best tie for second place at the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters and has three additional top-five finishes on the year.
After missing the fall season due to a right-wrist injury, Hickok bounced back in the spring and notched four top-10 finishes in seven events, including a season-best tie for second place at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship. It is the second career honor for Hickok after previously picking up All-Big 12 Team accolades last season.
Under Fields, Texas has recorded six top-five finishes, including claiming the title at the Big 12 Championship for the second-consecutive year. Fields was voted Coach of the Year by the league’s head coaches.
