Mike A. Myers Stadium was electric this week as high school students from around the state of Texas, collegiate athletes, and professionals gathered to compete in the four-day 2013 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
The crowd was loud and active throughout the Texas Relays, filling the stadium to near capacity to cheer on their favorite athletes and teams.
The annual meet was an opportunity for athletes to “wow” the crowd with their performances and perhaps be recognized on the national stage.
The Texas Relays are known to draw many different stars and athletes from around the nation—especially those…[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] that competed in the Texas Relays in the past. Marquise Goodwin, Jamaal Charles, Aaron Ross, and Sanya Richards-Ross were just some of the celebrities seen around the track.
The meet was graced with warm weather and sunshine throughout the event, making fans and competitors happy to stay and cheer.
An event that always draws a lot of attention at the Relays is the University/College Women’s 4×400 Meter Relay. The Relay featured Danielle Dowie, Briana Nelson, Kendra Chambers, and Courtney Okolo of the University of Texas competing against some of the best college women’s relay teams in the nation.
The Texas women ran a close race, leading for much of the event. In the final leg of the race Ebony Eutsey of the University of Florida beat Courtney Okolo by .04 of a second. The women finished second in the event with a time of 3:27:65, but will get their chance for revenge against the Gators in Florida next week.
“Going into practice next week we know what we need to work on,” said UT senior Kendra Chambers. “This isn’t a loss to us, it’s too close to be a loss. It was a very good race and we appreciate the competition that came out here.”
Danielle Dowie, who runs the first leg of the 4×400 relay, finished first in the University/College Women’s 400 Meter Hurdles on Friday evening with a time of 56.58. Her time was recognized as the best time in the nation this year.
“We did a good job, it was neck and neck and a fast time regardless of the loss,” Dowie said. “The better team won today, but next week we’ll go down to Florida and get a rematch. Next week we’ll get business done and it’ll be a different story.”
