Texas Soccer Announces its 2018 Fall Schedule
AUSTIN, Texas – Eleven home matches, including contests against 2017 NCAA quarterfinalist Baylor and Red River rival Oklahoma, and a road trip to battle 20-time NCAA champion North Carolina highlight the 2018 University of Texas fall soccer schedule released on Wednesday by head coach Angela Kelly.
The challenging 18-match regular-season slate includes match-ups against six opponents that earned bids into the 2017 NCAA Soccer Tournament Field of 64. Among those are NCAA quarterfinalist Baylor, third-round qualifiers West Virginia and North Carolina as well as TCU, Oklahoma State (second round) and Rice.
Times and television broadcast information for all Texas soccer matches will be released at a later date.
After opening the schedule with a home exhibition match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Aug. 10), the Longhorns begin the regular-season campaign with a road contest at Rice (Aug. 17).
From there, Texas ventures to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face off in two soccer matches over Aug. 24 & 26. While its opening opponent is still to be determined, the event finale is set against Kelly’s alma mater and 20-time NCAA Division I champion North Carolina.
The Burnt Orange & White begins a season-long, seven-match home stand on Aug. 30 against Long Beach State that won’t see the Horns forced to leave the friendly confines of Myers Stadium for nearly a month.
Over that stretch, Texas Soccer welcomes in Stephen F. Austin (Sept. 2), Texas State (Sept. 7), Houston Baptist (Sept. 9), UTRGV (Sept. 14) and Northern Colorado (Sept.16) in order before concluding the home stand by christening the rugged Big 12 Conference schedule against Baylor (Sept. 21).
Perhaps the most challenging stretch of the entire season begins on Sept. 28 at Oklahoma State as the Longhorns kick-off a four-match Big 12 road trip. From there, UT ventures to TCU (Sept. 30), Iowa State (Oct. 5) and West Virginia (Oct. 7).
The final stretch of 2018 sees the Longhorns at home for three straight contests against Oklahoma (Oct. 12), Kansas (Oct. 19) and Kansas State (Oct. 21) before wrapping up the regular season at Texas Tech (Oct. 25).
The annual Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Soccer Championship is set for Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo., over Oct. 28-Nov. 4. NCAA Tournament play begins with first round action over Nov. 9-11, eventually culminating in the annual NCAA Women’s College Cup in Cary, N.C., over Nov. 30 & Dec. 2.
UT is returning 23 letter winners from last fall’s 14-4-3 squad that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for only the fourth time in program history. Those returnees combined to account for 97 percent (28-of-29) of UT’s total goals and 90 percent (27-of-30) of the total assists from the 2017 campaign as well as all 14 goalkeeping wins and 11 shutouts between the pipes.
