SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Texas soccer team extended its perfect record to start the season Sunday when the Longhorns knocked off Sacramento State, 1-0.

The Longhorns improved to 5-0-0 for the first time since [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]2008 in part because of a goal by Katie Glenn in the 13th minute when the junior midfielder ran on to a pass from junior midfielder Kayra Dollas and uncorked a shot from more than 30 yards out that found the back of the net.

“I just turned and saw the goalkeeper out,” Glenn said. “She was further out off of her line, so I just took a shot and hoped it went in.”

Texas head coach Angela Kelly said after the game that Glenn’s goal reminiscent of the kind of shots Kelly once looked for when she played.

“Her goal was one after my own heart,” Kelly said. “She was on the half turn and realized the keeper was off her line — perfect placement and a fantastic finish.”

The teams each fired 10 shots at the opposing goal, with UT holding a 4-1 edge in shots on goals. Texas also tripled up its opponent on corner kicks, 9-3.

The game was supposed to have been the Longhorns’ second in three nights. But Friday’s game at No. 25 Cal got cancelled because of extreme temperatures and poor air quality caused by forest fires in the area.

Kelly said the cancelled game tested the Longhorns’ maturity, and said she was pleased with the way her team responded.

“Our squad was here to play,” she said. “The game got cancelled (at California) on Friday, and we were ready. It’s always tough for a team to sit out and have that much down time. It’s a young group, and I’m pleased with how engaged they stayed. They’re learning every day, and we’ve yet to put together a complete match. They’re finding ways to win, so as a staff, we couldn’t be more excited to be 5-0.”
