Texas Softball defeats Texas Tech 2-1 in weekend Big 12 series

Texas Longhorns Softball defeated Texas Tech this weekend 2-1 in a three games series in its first full Big 12 weekend series of the season. Texas (23-16, 3-1 Big 12) faced Baylor in March for its Big 12 season opener for one game before the second game was postponed.

On Friday evening, the Longhorns defeated Texas Tech (28-14, 1-5 Big 12)  in their Big 12 home opener 5-1.[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]Texas was led in the circle by freshman Tiarra Davis and at the plate by senior Taylor Thom.

Davis (10-7) pitched a full game while striking out nine and allowing only four hits and one unearned run. While on offense, Davis went 2-for-3 with a single and a double. Thom went 1-for-2 with 1 run scored and two RBIs. Thom knocked a two run home run over right field in the bottom of the first for her third home run in two games. The Longhorns finished game 1 with seven hits.

On Saturday afternoon, Texas Tech defeated the Longhorns 6-5 to even the series. Thom led the Longhorn offense again with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate and three runs scored. In the circle, junior Gabby Smith (10-4) took the loss for the Longhorns. Davis started the game for the Longhorns but was relieved by Smith in the third inning after giving up four runs.

Despite outhitting Texas Tech 10-7, the Longhorns could not overcome the Red Raiders, even though they came close. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Longhorns loaded the bases. Thom scored after freshman Devon Tunning was walked by Texas Tech. However, sophomore Stephanie Ceo lined out to first base to end the game.

On Sunday afternoon, the Longhorns defeated Texas Tech 7-3 to claim the series victory 2-1. On offense, the Longhorns were led by senior Mandy Ogle, Tunning and Ceo who went a combined 6-for-11 with a home run, a double and two triples.

Davis started in the circle again for the Longhorns and pitched a full game, grabbing  the win to improve to 11-7 on the season. She finished the game with eight strikeouts while only giving up two earned runs and six hits in her 13th complete game of the season.

The Longhorns started the scoring off in the first inning with a RBI fielder’s choice which scored senior Brejae Washington. In the second inning, Tunning tripled to left field to plate Ogle and Ceo followed with a single to push across Tunning to bring the score to 3-0.

In the third, the Red Raiders scored off a single to cut the Longhorns’ lead to two. In the fourth, the Longhorns put the game further out of reach with two runs off a single by Washington and a double by sophomore Lindsey Stephens.

Tunning scored the Longhorns lone home run of the game with a two run shot to right field. in the bottom of the fifth, putting the game at 7-1 and marking the Longhorns last score of the afternoon. Texas Tech scored twice more, once in the sixth with an unearned run off a fielding error and once in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

Texas has the week off before it travels to Ames, Iowa to face Iowa State in a three game conference series. Game one is scheduled for 4:00 pm Friday afternoon. The Longhorns will be on the road for seven games before returning to Austin at the end of April.
