Texas WBB vs Drexel in NCAA D1 Women’s Basketball Championship

AUSTIN, Texas – Welcome to the start of the run to the 2024 NCAA Championship. No. 1 seed Texas Longhorns Women’s Basketball hosts No. 16 seed Drexel Dragons. Texas record is 30-4 on the season and Drexel is 19-14.

Starting 5:

First Quarter – Texas: 19 | Drexel: 12

Game is super face on from both teams. Texas came out fast and scored nine points in the first several minutes. Texas’ defense is swarming and relentless. They are playing Drexel so close, makes you think of a humid hot day in Austin when you can not escape the heat.

For Drexel junior guard #3 Amaris Baker and sophomore guard #12 Grace O’Neill have a lot of speed and create fast lane drives.

Texas shooting at 45% from the field and controlling the boards with 13 rebounds to Drexel’s six. Aaliyah Moore has six points, Deyona Gaston has three rebounds, and Madison Booker as 4 assists.

Second Quarter – Texas: 40 | Drexel: 20

Taylor Jones scores a bucket with a nice hook shot. Madison Book blocks a layup by Drexel like Shaq would.

Before the season started we got to meet with coach Schaefer and a few players in their practice facility and we noticed this written on a board. This was back on Dec 19, 2023. Watching today’s game, it becomes crystal clear that Texas was very serious about this.

Texas is crushing Drexel who has 11 turnovers with Texas converting those to 12 points. 27 total rebounds for Texas. Just two offensive rebounds by Drexel. Texas has made just 1-3 from three point ranges, but that is because they own the paint with 26 points in the paint.

Taylor Jones has 10pts Deyona Gaston has 9pts and 6 rebounds Madison Booker has 6pts, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and a massive BLOCK which may have put fear in Drexel. #HookEm

Third Quarter – Texas: 74| Drexel: 32

Let’s see if we can properly describe this…

Drexel player gets the ball in the paint, turns and shoots, Shay Holle grabs the ball before the ball leaves the players hands and steals the ball. It was like a block but with a steal. Incredible!

Texas is RE-LENT-LESS!

Here’s another…Booker passes to Jones who is in the paint, Drexel collapses on Jones and she has 5 plays trying to get to her. Jones turns, struggles to find an opening for a shot, takes it, scores, and was fouled. Texas on a 16-3 run from the start of the 3Q.

Shay Holle and Shaylee Gonzales are given a rest. The crowd gives both a resounding applaud. Holle has points but has been a terror on defense with three massive “out of this world” blocks, and three steals. Gonzales has 18 points, hitting 7-10 from the field and 4-5 from three point range.

Taylor Jones has played 18 minutes and has 18 points.

Texas went on a 32-12 run in the third quarter, is shooting 51% (29-57), and had 20 second change points.
