NEW YORK, N.Y. — Texas men’s swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Townley Haas is one of eight athletes to be named a finalist for the 89th annual AAU Sullivan Award, which is given to the nation’s top amateur athlete.

In 2016, Haas brought home[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro as part of the American 4×200-meter freestyle relay and placed fifth in the 200-meter freestyle. He won 10 NCAA event titles and pulled in 18 All-America times to help the Longhorns win the national championship in each of his first three seasons in Austin, and finish as the national runner-up in his senior campaign. He set a new NCAA record in the 500 freestyle at the 2019 NCAA Championships in March and was part of the Longhorns’ 800-yard freestyle relay that established new NCAA, American and U.S. Open records and the team’s 400-yard free-style relay that set a pool record.
