Volleyball opens season with 3-0 sweep of Oklahoma
Junior outside hitter Logan Eggleston hit .406 and chipped in 17 kills, two digs and a block Thursday to lead the Texas volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-16, 25-21 sweep of Oklahoma at McCasland Field House in Norman, Okla.
Sophomore Skyler Fields added 13 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Molly Phillips had nine kills and five blocks. Junior middle blocker Brionne Butler finished with five kills and a team-leading six blocks.
Junior setter Jhenna Gabriel quarterbacked the offense with 37 assists and added five digs, while libero Morgan O’Brien, a graduate transfer from Illinois, had 14 digs in her Texas debut, adding three assists.
The Longhorns won the match in a three-set sweep but had to rally late in the first set to win it. OU led, 15-14, before the Longhorns went on a 10-4 run to claim the first set. UT then held a one-point lead in the second set, at 15-14, before going on a similar sprint, winning 10 of the final 12 points to claim the second set.
The third, the Sooners and Longhorns battled to a 21-21 tie before Texas reeled off four straight points to finish off the sweep.
The teams will meet again Friday at 6 p.m. on ESPNU to complete the season-opening doubleheader.
