WACO, Texas — Junior guard Brooke McCarty scored a season-high 22 points and freshman Joyner Holmes followed up her fourth Big 12 Freshman of the Week award of the season with her sixth double-double of the year to lead the No. 11/13 University of Texas women’s basketball team (19-4 overall, 13-0 in Big 12 games) to an 85-79 upset of No. 2/2 Baylor (23-2, 12-1).
The loss was Baylor’s first at home in nearly three years, snapped a 14-game losing streak for the Longhorns [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]against the Bears and gave UT head coach Karen Aston her first victory over Baylor.
By ending the Bears’ 21-game winning streak, Texas now has the second-longest active streak in the NCAA, at 17 victories in a row, and are 13-0 in the Big 12 for the first time in program history.
“This was a really good basketball game,” Aston said. “You saw tonight how good the Big 12 was. I’m really proud of our players. I thought they were tough tonight.”
McCarty’s offensive outburst made her the 42nd player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points, just days after teammate Kelsey Lang joined the 1,000-point club.
Holmes’ double-double came in the form of 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. She also added two assists, two blocks and two steals.
Junior guard Ariel Atkins scored 20 points for the Longhorns, while Lashann Higgs added 16.
Texas now returns home to face Kansas at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in a game that will be broadcast on Longhorn Network.
