Around the Big 12: Injuries to Rattler, Hubbard headline week in Big 12
Oklahoma State 20, Kansas State 18
L.D. Brown’s 110 all-purpose yards proved to be enough Saturday to lead No. 14 Oklahoma State past Kansas State in Manhattan. The biggest news out of Kansas, however, may be an injury to Oklahoma State star running back Chuba Hubbard.
It was an uncharacteristic game from the Cowboys, who were held scoreless through the first two quarters for only the second time since 2015, and were held to fewer than 21 total points for the first time since opening the 2020 season with a 16-7 win over Tulsa.
After getting shut out in the first half, the Cowboys managed to put together 20 unanswered points after the intermission to overpower a banged up Kansas State program. Hubbard, though, left the game early in the second half and his status for next week remains unknown. He finished with a season-low six carries for just 31 yards.
The only form of offense for the Wildcats was Will Howard’s 243 all-purpose yards. The quarterback was both the leading rusher and passer in a losing effort.
Oklahoma State (5-1 overall, 4-1 against Big 12 teams) will be on the road in Norman next week. Kansas State (4-3 overall, 4-2 in conference games) will be at No. 17 Iowa State.
Iowa State 38, Baylor 31
Running back Breece Hall ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns to lead Iowa State’s comeback over Baylor Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
Hall, now solidifying a historic season with more than 1,000 rushing yards (1,034) already, powered a third-quarter comeback. Down, 24-10, early in the third, Iowa State reeled off four straight touchdown drives. Hall accounted for two of those, a 17-yard and six-yard run, respectively.
Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer led his team in rushing and passing. He finished with 295 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions through the air.
No. 17 Iowa State (5-2 overall, 5-1 in Big 12 games) will play Kansas State next week. Baylor (1-4 overall,1-4 agaiunst Bog 12 teams) will travel to Texas Tech next Saturday.
Oklahoma 62, Kansas 9
Running back Rhomondre Stevenson ran for 110 yards and a touchdown as Oklahoma cruised over Kansas in Norman. Quarterback Spencer Rattler, though, left the game early in the second quarter after injuring his hip.
This noon kickoff never was a contest. Oklahoma scored the first 31 points, thanks to a 540-yard performance by the offense. Rattler left the game after throwing for 212 yards and with his team up, 21-0. Head coach Lincoln Riley indicated Rattler is not likely to miss time.
A winless Kansas team looked further from being competitive than it has been all season. Jalon Daniels went 11-for-31 and had more interceptions, two, than touchdowns, zero.
Oklahoma (5-2 overall, 4-2 in Big 12) will play No. 14 Oklahoma State next week in its lone top 25 matchup left on the schedule. Kansas will play No. 21 Texas in Lawrence.
TCU 34, Texas Tech 18
Quarterback Max Duggan ran for 154 yards and three touchdowns to lead TCU over Texas Tech from Fort Worth.
After what looked to be a lost season for TCU, the Horned Frogs are now back to .500 on the year, thanks to TCU’s second straight win and possibly the Frogs’ most complete performance of the season.
The Horned Frogs led wire to wire, holding a 17-point lead for most of the second half. Despite that, Texas Tech still had more first downs, passing yards and fewer penalties.
The Red Raiders now are spiraling after losing two straight close games. Nevada transfer Henry Colombi threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.
TCU (3-3 overall and in Big 12 games) will play West Virginia next week. Texas Tech (2-5 overall, 1-5 against Big 12 teams) will return home to play Baylor
