AFTER FALLING short at Regionals last year, the Texas women’s ultimate frisbee club team chose not to hang their heads. They didn’t let the frustration of not reaching their goal of advancing to Nationals negatively affect their chances of making it to the big tournament this year.
Now, Texas is working harder than ever, adding a 6 a.m. Monday morning workout to a weekly schedule that already includes three practices —[s2If current_user_is(s2member_level2)]two of which last three hours and the third goes for four hours. The Melee squad, the Longhorns’ “A” team, took a 22-9 record into the postseason a year ago but was eliminated after finishing fifth at Regionals.
“We worked hard and we were good,” senior Alexandra Klein, the president of the club, said. “We just had a bad day. We had some injuries … and some drops.”
Klein, who started playing ultimate frisbee in high school, also played soccer prior to coming to the 40 Acres. Despite the cardiovascular endurance needed for both sports, Klein says one of her least favorite things is running.
But, like many of her teammates, she also despises losing. “We’re going to make it this year. There’s not going to be any if’s, and’s or but’s about it,” Klein said. “Everyone has that drive that I wish we would’ve had in previous years. Everyone is connected on the same level, has the same determination, and is willing to work hard.”
This year’s National tournament begins May 25.
