A semifinalist for the award a season ago, Texas football quarterback Sam Ehlinger is up for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award again this year.
The nomination for the 2019 award comes as another in a lengthy list of preseason accolades for the junior signal caller. Ehlinger’s preseason honors so far include the 2019 Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award, Walter Camp Player of the Year and Wuerffel Trophy watch lists.

Just last month Ehlinger was named the Big 12 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year as well as a first-team All-Big 12 Preseason selection by Phil Steele, on top of that he was also named third-team preseason All-American by Athlon Sports.
The Earl Campbell award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.
The Austin native Ehlinger was honorable mention All-Big 12 last year after racking up 3,292 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns and 16 rushing touchdowns — a Texas record for quarterbacks. He was also the first player in Texas history to pass for at least 25 touchdowns and rush for at least 15 in a season.
According to UT, Ehlinger’s 41 touchdowns responsible for in 2018 are the second-most in school history, trailing only Colt McCoy’s 45 touchdowns in 2008.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and then up to 5 finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans, and previous winners. The finalists will be brought to Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet, scheduled for Jan. 15, 2020.
