Horns Illustrated Week in Review (May 6th-13th)

Baseball

The Texas Baseball team swept Texas Southern in doubleheader action on Saturday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

In the first game of the doubleheader, three Longhorn pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter over seven innings and helped Texas to a 4-0 victory. Ty Marlow drove in two runs. Four Texas batters finished with two hits in the first game—Mark Payton, C.J Hinojosa, Jeremy Montalbano, and Collin Shaw.

Parker French (4-4) got the designated start in the first game and picked up his fourth win of the season. French went three innings and struck out two. Travis Duke and Corey Knebel came on in relief and pitched two innings each. Duke struck out one batter and Knebel struck out four batters. Knebel picked up his ninth save of the season.

In the second game of the doubleheader, three Texas pitchers combined to allow one hit and helped Texas to a 12-0 victory. Dillon Peters (6-3) got the designated start and recorded his sixth win of the season. Peters pitched three innings and allowed one hit, a walk and struck out three. Nathan Thornhill came on in relief in the fourth inning and struck out two batters over four innings pitched. Josh Urban came on in relief in the eighth inning and allowed a walk and struck out one batter.

Four Texas batters drove in two runs apiece. Brooks Marlow, Mark Payton, Jeremy Montalbano, and Taylor Stell.

Texas hit three triples in both games. Hinojosa and Mark Payton finished with two triples apiece, one in each game. Mark Payton now has eight triples this season and is tied for the fourth-best in school history. Payton has also reached base safely in 37 consecutive games.

The Longhorns garnered 26 hits in the doubleheader, 10 of them were for extra bases.

The Longhorns were hoping to make the Big 12 Tournament, but TCU’s win over West Virginia on Sunday eliminates the Longhorn’s chances at the postseason. On Thursday, Texas will face TCU in a three-game series in Forth Worth.

Softball

The No. 7/6 Texas Softball team defeated Baylor, 2-1, in extra innings on Sunday at Red & Charline McCombs Field.

Senior Kim Bruins finished Senior Day…[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] with a walk-off hit in the ninth inning that brought in Taylor Hoagland for the game-winning run.

Taylor Hoagland went 3 for 3 from the plate and scored two runs. Brejae Washington and Kim Bruins garnered two hits apiece in the game.

Texas received the No. 4 national seed in the 2013 NCAA Championship. Texas will be hosting the NCAA Austin Regional May 17-19 at Red & Charline McCombs Field. Texas, Army, Houston and South Carolina are in the Austin Regional. The Longhorns will play host to Army on May 17.

Texas finishes the regular season at 44-8 overall and 14-4 in conference play.

Men’s Golf

Texas freshman Brandon Stone won his third Big 12 Conference Player of the Month award during the week. Stone also won 2013 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and was crowned the Big 12 individual champion at the Big 12 Tournament last month.

After winning their fourth Big 12 Championship last month, the Texas Men’s Golf team was given a No. 1 seed in the NCAA South Central Regional Championship at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from the six regionals will advance to the May 28-June 2 NCAA Championship at Capital City Club in Atlanta. The Men’s Golf team won the 2012 NCAA championship last season—the program’s third NCAA championship—and will look to repeat this season.

Women’s Golf

The Texas Women’s Golf team finished in fifth place at the NCAA East Regional Championship and secured a spot in the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Championship is being held on May 21-24 at UGA Golf Course in Athens, Ga.

Texas had two players—Katelyn Sepmoree and Haley Stephens—finish at even-par on the final round to help secure their place at the NCAA Championships in Athens.

Men’s Tennis

After defeating Texas A&M Corpus Christi 4-0 on Friday, the Texas Men’s Tennis team was eliminated in the Second Round of the NCAA Championship by Texas A&M, 4-3.

With the team scores tied at 3-3, Logan Glasspool lost to Texas A&M’s Junior Ore in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-3.

The Men’s Tennis team finishes the season at 17-9 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Soren-Hess Olesen will compete in the 64-player singles draw and Chris Camillone / David Holliner will compete in the 32-team doubles draw in the 2013 NCAA Championships. The individual singles and doubles competition will be held on May 22-27 in Urbana, Illinois.

Women’s Tennis

After defeating William and Mary 4-0 in the Opening Round of the NCAA Championships, the Texas Women’s Tennis team were eliminated by Virginia, 4-3, on Sunday.

With the team scores tied at 3-3, Virginia’s Li Xi defeated Noel Scott—3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (0)—in a win at fourth singles.

Texas finishes the season at 18-11 overall.

Track and Field

Johannes Hock was the 2013 Big 12 Outdoor Outstanding Male Freshman of the Year and  coach Bubba Thornton earned Men’s Outdoor Coach of the Year.

Mike A. Meyers Stadium is holding host to the UIL Texas State Track & Field Championships this week.

The Texas Men and Women’s Track and Field athletes await the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon in June. Any Texas athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective event will earn berths into the NCAA West Preliminary Round, which will be held May 23-25 at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Texas athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West prelims will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Longhorn MVP

This week’s MVP goes to—Texas Golf freshman Brandon Stone—for winning his third Big 12 Player of the Month Award (September, February, April) after being named 2013 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year two weeks ago.

Honorable Mention

This week’s Honorable Mention goes to—Johannes Hock and Bubba Thornton—for winning their awards this week. Hock was the 2013 Big 12 Outdoor Outstanding Male Freshman of the Year and Bubba Thornton earned Men’s Outdoor Coach of the Year.
