Austin -- Texas senior DE Jackson Jeffcoat has been named to the watch list for the 2013 Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced.
A Longhorn has won the award three times, including QB Colt McCoy in back-to-back years in 2008-09, and RB Ricky Williams in 1998.
Already named to the 2013 watch lists of the Bednarik Award, Nagurski Trophy, Lott Trophy, Lombardi Award and CFPA Defensive Awards, Jeffcoat is a fourth-year end who has appeared in 27 games with 20 starts, and has posted at least one sack in 10 of his last 13 games with 12 over that span. For his career, Jeffcoat has 117 tackles (59 solo), 14.5 sacks, 38 TFL, 22 pressures, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and five pass break ups.
After tallying 71 tackles, including 21 tackles for loss and eight sacks, in 2011, he missed the final seven games of 2012 with a pectoral injury. Jeffcoat still finished second on the team in TFL (11) and sacks (four). He was named a 2011 second-team All-Big 12 selection and was tabbed honorable mention Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2010.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in November. The 2013 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 125 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN SportsCenter on Thursday, December 12. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s annual national awards banquet onJanuary 11, 2014, at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year award is the nation's fourth-oldest college football accolade and is named for Walter Camp, "The Father of American football." Camp - a former Yale University athlete and football coach - is credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation, a New Haven-based all-volunteer group, was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.
