Longhorns Named Big 12 Men’s & Women’s Track & Field Athletes of the Week

Texas sprinter Dowie has been named the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Female Athlete of the Week for competitions March 28-31, the league announced Wednesday.  It is the second conference honor for the junior and her first of the 2013 outdoor season.

Dowie won the 400-meter hurdles at the 86th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin last weekend with a time of 56.58 seconds, the top mark in the nation.  She also led off the Longhorns’ runner-up 4x400m relay squad, which crossed in 3:27.65, the second-best mark nationally, top mark in the West Region and ninth-best time in UT history.

In addition, Dowie ran the third leg for Texas’ 4x100m relay team, which placed third in 43.59, the No. 3 time in the nation and second-fastest in the West Region.

Dowie and the No. 6 Longhorns head east to Gainesville, Fla., this week to compete at the 69th Annual Pepsi Florida Relays on Friday and Saturday, April 5-6.

Crouser shined last week in his first shot-put competition since last season. The sophomore tossed the implement 67 1/2 (20.43m) in capturing the University shot put (section A) title Friday at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. His toss ranks No. 3 in the world this year and only one other collegiate performer since the beginning of the 2011 season has posted a better mark. Joe Kovacs of Penn State had a toss of 68-5 to win the 2012 Big Ten outdoor title.
Crouser, a native of Gresham, Ore., who redshirted during the 2013 indoor season, also claimed fourth in Saturday’s University discus (section A) with a toss of 194-6 (59.28m), a mark that ranks No. 7 nationally and No. 1 in the Big 12.
