No. 5 Women’s Tennis shuts out West Virginia, wins share of Big 12 title

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 5 Texas won the doubles point and dominated the singles session on its way to a 4-0 victory over West Virginia Sunday afternoon at Texas Tennis Center. The win assures the Longhorns of at least a share of their first Big 12 regular season title since 2007. Texas can win their first outright Big 12 regular season title since 2004 with a win this Friday (April 20) over Baylor in Austin.

"It's a great moment because just two years ago the team only had four or five scholarship players and we were struggling mightily," said third-year UT Tennis head coach Howard Joffe. "So, at two-and-a-half years later to be hoisting that trophy feels very good for the players who got it done in such a quick amount of time."

In doubles tennis, Anna and Bianca Turati played their first tennis match together since November of 2016 and came away victorious. The Turati twins knocked off Giobanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau at the third position. UT's 45^th-ranked duo of Petra Granic and Bojana Markovic locked up the doubles point with a 6-0 win over Christian Jordan and Sofia Duran at first doubles. The remaining contest at second doubles was suspended.

Texas attacked forcefully in singles and locked up the team win in about 90 minutes from start-to-finish. The 75^th-ranked Granic produced her 11^th straight singles victory and dealt Lyn Yuen Choo a 6-0, 6-0 defeat at the third position.

UT's top-ranked Bianca Turati dusted off her eighth straight singles victory and shut out WVU's Jordan, 6-0, 6-0 at first singles for a 3-0 Longhorns lead. Moments later, Texas' 27^th-ranked Anna Turati closed out the victory with her 6-0, 6-2 win over Courteau at second singles. The remaining matches were suspended.

"I think that anyone that sees the box score realizes that we have a strong team," Joffe added. "We played and performed a little bit better than we did against Iowa State. That was encouraging. The thing that overshadows all of this is the prize to win here, to win a share of the conference. I think that was what was on everyone's mind. I am very proud and very happy for this team."
