Did you know that Quinn Ewers was recruited to play at Alabama when he was in high school by none other than Steve Sarkisian, who recognized early on that Ewers was an elite QB.

Now, Ewers, the starting quarterback for The University of Texas under head coach Steve Sarkisian, is on the Davey O’Brien Award watch list.

The Davey O’Brian Award is given to the nation’s best college quarterback each year.

Ewers attended Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, Texas and played for coach Riley Dodge. Carroll HS also produced Greg McElroy who played under coach Todd Dodge, Riley’s father, and went on to play for Alabama, then The New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals.

After Todd Dodge left Carroll, he coached at Westlake High School and groomed Sam Ehlinger.

All this to say that Quinn Ewers has been training under the best quarterback coaches in the country for a long time and now under Sarkisian.

This prestigious Davey O’Brian Award celebrates the nation's most exceptional collegiate quarterback.

In his sophomore year, Ewers made his mark by starting 10 games and exhibiting remarkable performance. He completed 58.1% of his passes for 2,177 yards, 15 touchdowns, and only six interceptions in the 2022 season. His achievements include recording the fifth-highest passing yards for a Texas freshman and the fourth-most touchdown passes for a Longhorn freshman in a season. Notably, Ewers shone in the Alamo Bowl against Washington, registering career highs with 369 passing yards and one touchdown.

Heading into the 2023 season, Ewers boasts an impressive streak of 116 consecutive passes without an interception, tied for the eighth-longest in program history. The Davey O'Brien Award journey involves several stages of selection, with the official midseason watch list being revealed in October. Fans' social media votes will contribute to determining the finalists and the ultimate winner, who will be announced live on ESPN during The Home Depot College Football Awards in December.

At the end of last season, Horns Illustrated compared Ewers first season at Texas against the first season of past Texas quarterback greats like Sam Ehlinger, Colt McCoy, Vince Young, and Major Applewhite.

I like exploring the why's and have three objectives. First is to give value to those who would spend time with our content. Second is to be respectful of others and for the opportunity to tell a positive story about all of the Texas Longhorns teams, players, and coaches regardless of their record. Lastly, to put wind in the sails of others using the Horns Illustrated platform. Life is GOOD!
