No. 8 Texas Baseball's offense combined for 17 hits behind a three-hit six inning stand by Parker French to beat Minnesota 13-2 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field Friday Night.
The Longhorns held a 3-2 record entering the game with a big win over UTSA 14-2. The Golden Gophers sought their first win of the season with a 0-3 record.
After the game Texas head coach Augie Garrido said he had encouraged his team to play with an edge against each opponent.
“They’ve put a lot of work into their hitting game," Garrido said. “You can’t be one dimensional but, when they swing at the bats like that, go for it."
Garrido also commented on French’s leadership to the team and his strong athleticism.
“He has a settling effect on the rest of the team," Garrido said. "He trusts the team behind him."
By the second inning each starter had a hit, with Junior infielder, Ben Johnson and freshman infielder, Bret Boswell having two a piece and Texas rolled.
Texas’ runs were “contagious” as freshman center, Michael Cantu described reflecting on the team’s hitting.
"I think we’re swinging at better pitches and I’m happy I’m in the lineup,”
Texas sophomore left-handed pitcher, Jon Malmin came in n relief and earned his first career save by pitching three frames of a one-hit ball.
“It’s a marathon not a sprint. We’ve got some power this year,” French said. “Malmin’s attacking the strike zone. He’s a good athlete and see him have a lot of success,” said French.
Texas will face Minnesota in a double header on Saturday and a final fourth game on Sunday. The games will be played at the UFCU Disch-Falk Field and will be televised on The Longhorn Network.
