Texas Baseball – Peters, Barrera Claim Weekly Honors from Big 12

IRVING, Texas – Texas' Dillon Peters and Tres Barrera claimed weekly honors from the Big 12 for their play in last weekend's series vs. Kansas State, the league announced Monday.
Peters was named Pitcher of the Week while Barrera is the Newcomer of the Week. Both had a big hand in Texas capturing a series victory over the Wildcats.
Peters propelled Texas to a no-hitter on Friday, tossing seven hitless innings as Texas went on to a 12-0 victory. In his first start since April 26, Peters struck out eight and worked 1-2-3 innings in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth. The junior issued three walks, but worked around them each time to improve to 6-3 on the year.
Morgan Cooper came on to pitch two no-hit innings, giving Texas its 22nd no-hitter in school history and first since Brandon Workman threw one on March 1, 2009. It was the first time K-State was no-hit since March 20, 2001. The last time the Wildcats were no-hit at home was April 11, 1983. Peters' eight strikeouts were one shy of his career-high nine set earlier this year against Baylor. The Indianapolis native lowered his ERA to 2.27.
Barrera led Texas offensively, going 7-for-13 with three home runs in three games. Barrera blasted two homers in Sunday's 9-8, 10-inning victory, including what proved to be the game-winning run with a solo shot in the top of the 10th. The Eagle Pass, Texas, native had five RBIs and five runs on the weekend, while finishing with a 1.308 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage.
Barrera opened the series with a 3-for-4 effort on Friday night, including a double, RBI and two runs, then went 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk on Saturday. In the Sunday finale, he went 3-for-6 with three RBIs and the two home runs. The freshman is batting .286 on the season.
Peters garners his second weekly award this season after winning Pitcher of the Week honors on March 3. This is the third career award for Peters. This is the second Newcomer of the Week this season for Barrera, also earning it on March 31.
